Disney Sound Source parallel port “sound card”

Disney Sound Source (added to my collection in 2005)

  • 8-bit mono audio playback based on a simple resistor network DAC somewhat similar to a “Covox Speech thing”, though the DSS has an additional buffer chip, which limits it to 7khz of bandwidth, the Covox is completely at the mercy of the host CPU and parallel port, but on a very fast machine it could do 44khz.
  • Support by several DOS games (Sierra was well known for their support)
  • Windows 3.x, 9x, NT drivers availble (WAV playback capabilities only)

The DSS is a very similar concept to the earlier Covox Speech Thing.
